The Basics
What is the basic set up within yourself to establish freedom? What I mean is, what do you need, what sort of basic alignment do you need to be fulfilled and free? What sort of basic alignment do you need to initiate basic functionality in so far as intimacy, love, creativity, community flow and self fulfillment? There is a basic threshold of alignment or awareness before you can really enjoy life. Up to a certain point life is suffering, postponement and literally samsara. At a certain level of freedom there is a shift. It’s like you realize on basic levels that it is futile to shoot yourself in the foot. What I am asking is, what would it take to get you to this basic level of conscious competency, if you have not already done so, or entered such already. That level of life where you have woken up enough, and opened your heart enough to clarity that you can begin to function in your basic honest intimacy.
I will give you a couple of examples. My dad lived lots of his life in a limited way. He knew that he wanted a deeper love and a deeper aliveness to his life and somehow this was denied to him within his conditioned self. And I would say that it took a bit of chaos and realignment within his love life for this to flower in the least.
Buddha suffered a lot as the seeker. He groped around in the dark with somewhat retarded techniques and austerities and one way or another he hit that basic point where love was possible and being awoke from within. The truth was realized.
A man like Osho lived a somewhat mischievous and rebellious life in his younger years and had a certain inner pull and in his late teens had a major break through, a major seeing of types and began to live a very conscious poetic life.
At some point in his life Jesus touched upon a critical point of realization. What instigated this opening? What was the tipping point between, the man and the god?
There are people like Eckhart Tolle who literally had to hit the point of wanting to kill themselves and had totally given up and then… the opening happened.
What is your tipping point? What is your threshold, or critical point… that point that changes everything…
That point when you leave your deadness and live for the first time…
And there are so many types of deadness… there is the deadness of a stagnant relationship… there is the deadness of a stagnant mentality… there is that reclusive indifference that never ever risks its heart for anything… there is the silent sleep of a lie lived and believed… there is the heart that claims to not know the way… there is the overly mindy mind that thinks it has all the answers and yet knows nothing of love and realness… there is that bewildered overwhelmed look or feel that just feels like it is all too much and crawls back into the cave to hibernate and hide peacefully from what seems so much…
And that is all fine and completely dandy… but there is that point… that initial point that makes everything possible… what Gurdjieff would call “the necessity of knowing that you are in prison”, that moment where you absolutely know that you are stuck in prison. Prison of mind, prison of society, prison of religion, prison of fear. And whatever that prison is, you finally get to that point where you do not want to pretend that you are not in prison anymore, because to pretend is to throw away the key. There is that point that you would rather die than sit around and accept the prison reality. And that is where the journey begins, where the real struggle begins. You reach that point where you will do anything and make any sacrifice in order to be free. Weather it takes ten years of chiseling away or one perfect explosion, you will do whatever it takes to be free.
And so the journey begins and for the first time you start to make true efforts to be free. You practice self-remembrance or it practices you. You set up that context that will make you free, that divine accident that you longingly learn to beg for.
So in the spirit of freedom, I ask you honestly my dear friend… What will make you free? What will light that passion of freedom that burns down your prison walls?
Dare to dream the dreamless dream…
